Anastacio T. Caedo

1907-1990


He was a master classical sculptor in the tradition of Guillermo Tolentino. He entered the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1925, at the same time, working at his mentor’s atelier as a student-assistant and protégé. He assisted Tolentino in creating most of his landmark commissions like the University of the Philippines Oblation and the Bonifacio Monument. Among Caedo’s famous monuments are the MacArthur Landing in Paolo, Leyte, Rizal Monument in Shaw Boulevard, Raja Sulayman in the University of the Philippines, St, Thomas More at the Ateneo, and the Mabini monument in Ermita. For his numerous, outstanding monuments, he was conferred the title “Knights Grand Commander” by the Order of the Knights of Rizal. Among his clients were Philippine Presidents Aguinaldo, Quezon Osmena, Quirino, Marcos, and Aquino. He also made busts of famous actors, and the official Trophy of the Film Academy of the Philippines. He was Araw ng Maynila Awardee for sculpture in 1963.
