Ben Maramag is a Filipino painter recognized for his pioneering mastery of the spray gun technique and his contributions to Philippine contemporary art.
He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines, and held his first solo exhibition at Indigo Gallery in 1967, followed by shows at the Luz Gallery and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
Curator Ray Albano described him as “the leading master of the spray gun, having had the authority and experience to play around it… His language was complete with nuances of expression and allusion.” This innovative approach allowed Maramag to create atmospheric compositions with subtle tonal shifts and expressive abstraction.
In 1970, he was a recipient of the first CCP Thirteen Artists Award, recognizing his role as one of the country’s most promising and experimental modernists. His works were later included in landmark exhibitions such as “Insights into Philippine Contemporary Art” (Washington, D.C., 1976) and “Five Directions” (Museum of Philippine Art), affirming his international presence.
