Emmanuel Garibay

Emmanuel Garibay is a prominent Filipino social realist painter whose work examines the lives of the working class and the cultural tensions within a deeply Catholic society. He earned a BA in Sociology and a BFA from the University of the Philippines, later completing an MA in Divinity at the Union Theological Seminary, a background that informs the moral and spiritual complexity of his imagery. Garibay’s first solo exhibition, Pasada (1993) at Liongoren Gallery, received the Juror’s Choice Award from the AAP Annual Competition, followed by international recognition with a Second Prize win at the II Bienal del Baloncesto en Balles Artes in Spain (1994). In 2002, he was honored with the CCP Thirteen Artists Award, cementing his place among the country’s most influential contemporary painters.
