This exhibit celebrates the multifaceted career of an artist who has left an indelible mark on the Philippine art scene. A graduate of the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, he has worn many hats throughout his career - a graphic artist, a children’s book illustrator, a photographer, and most notably, the chief editorial cartoonist at the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
He was a voice during the Marcos martial law years, beginning his career as a political cartoonist in alternative publications. His work is a testament to the power of art as a form of social commentary.
As a member of Kaisahan, a group of social realists, his art reflects the realities of society, often highlighting the struggles and triumphs of everyday life. His comic strips, “Pinoy Nga!” and “A. Lipin,” have been recognized with the National Book Award for Cartoons in 1997 and 2000, respectively.
In 1986, his unique blend of humor and social commentary earned him the Catholic Mass Media Awards for the Best in Humor Cartoon.
