Raul Isidro is a Filipino painter, printmaker, and abstractionist whose career spans over five decades. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas in 1965, where he trained under leading modernists.
His work “Seinegung” (Affection) was featured in the German publication Philippinische Malerei (Philippine Painting) by Verlag Neues Forum in 1970, marking his early international recognition. He won Second Prize at the 17th Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) for “Way IN” and received a Certificate of Merit for “Genesis of Man” in 1976. He also won Second Place at the First Society of Philippine Sculptors Competition in 1968.
Isidro’s achievements include the prestigious TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) Award in 1979, a cultural grant from the Australian government in 1980, and a commission to design five abstract commemorative stamps for the Philippine Post Office in 1984.
In 2008, he held his forty‑year retrospective exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), celebrating his long career and contributions to Philippine modern art. His works are known for their elegant abstractions inspired by nature, particularly landscapes and seascapes, rendered with bold color and gestural brushwork.
