Statement of the Philippine Consulate General in New York on the Demise of Artist Manuel Rodriguez, Sr.

The Philippine Consulate General in New York extends deepest condolences to the Rodriguez family on the demise of Mr. Manuel “Mang Maning” Rodriguez, Sr. on 6 May 2017 in Florida at the age of 105 years old.

Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. was known as the “Father of Contemporary Printmaking in the Philippines”. He was a gifted artist, teacher, and mentor. He held many exhibitions at the Philippine Center in New York and generously provided the Center with some of his best works. He likewise founded and served as President Emeritus of the Society of Philippine American Artists (SPAA).

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a Proclamation declaring  17 August 2016 “Manuel –Mang Maning –Rodriguez, Sr.  Day” in recognition of his contributions to society through his art.  His other accolades and awards are too many to mention.

The Philippine Consulate General in New York will always treasure Mang Maning’s artistry, friendship, wisdom, vision, and generosity.  We will always be grateful for the opportunity to interact, learn from, and honor a great Filipino artist. END
