Solomon Saprid (1917–2003) was a Filipino sculptor best known for his bronze “Tikbalang” series, which he began in 1971. These works were created by welding scraps of metal, producing a distinctive jagged effect that became his signature style. One of his major pieces, “Taming of the Tikbalang,” was installed at the Makati commercial center, symbolizing his bold approach to myth and modernity.
Saprid held his first solo exhibition at the Solidaridad Galleries in 1969, marking the start of his prominence in the Philippine art scene. He represented the Philippines at the 1971 Indian Triennale and the 1973 Australian Biennial, affirming his international stature.
In 1990, Saprid joined fellow artists Onib Olmedo and Ang Kiukok in the landmark exhibition “Three Figurative Expressionists” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), underscoring his place among the country’s most important modern sculptors.
