Jose “Joe” Datuin is a Filipino painter, sculptor, and designer celebrated for his mastery of abstract form and vibrant color. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas, where he developed the foundation of his artistic practice.
Datuin is best known for his abstract colorful paintings and metal sculptures, which explore themes of movement, balance, and harmony. His iconic work “Dancing Rings” won the Grand Prize in the International Sport and Art Contest during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, affirming his place on the global stage. His other well‑known sculpture series include Ballerina, Dance of the Rings, and Bosom, each reflecting his fascination with rhythm and the human form.
His career is marked by numerous international honors: he won the Gold Medal at the UNESCO International Calendar Design Competition in France (1982), a prize at the Moscow Olympic Poster Design Competition (1980), and recognition at the AAP Annual Competition (1978). These achievements highlight his versatility across painting, sculpture, and design.
Datuin has exhibited widely in the Philippines and abroad, including in New York, Singapore, Tokyo, and Paris, and his works continue to be celebrated for their graceful abstraction and universal appeal.
